beach eats: onigiri from sunny blue
Onigiri (おにぎり) and omusubi (おむすび) are the same thing: Japanese rice balls. Say LESS! Sunny Blue is one of my favorites to pick up to take to the beach because of their convenient packaging.
The two names have fascinating origins: onigiri comes from the verb nigiru (to grip or squeeze), describing how they’re formed by pressing rice together with your hands. Omusubi, on the other hand, relates to the word musubu (to tie or bind), which some say refers to both the act of shaping the rice and the spiritual binding of people who share food together. The major difference between the two names are the region its from and the shape – so really they are the same!
Sunny Blue makes theirs to order, so the nori stays crisp when you get it. They stuff each one generously with fillings like spicy miso beef, curry chicken, or spicy salmon with mayo. My go-tos are miso beef, mushroom, and any of the curry flavors.
