ewg’s 2024 dirty dozen and clean fifteen: what you need to know
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has just released their 2024 “Clean Fifteen” and “Dirty Dozen” produce lists. These lists are an excellent resource for making informed decisions when shopping for produce, especially knowing being able to exclusively buy all organic is a luxury.
While the lists have remained relatively consistent over the past few years, it’s always a good idea to check the most recent edition, as it reflects the latest data on pesticide use in U.S. farming and crops.
The Dirty Dozen
This list includes the 12 conventionally grown fruits and veggies with the highest levels of pesticides. This year, a staggering 95% of the items tested were contaminated, with strawberries, spinach, and leafy greens topping the list.
The Clean Fifteen
On the other hand, the Clean Fifteen lists the produce with the least amount of pesticides. Nearly 65% of these items had no detectable pesticide residues, with avocados and sweet corn being the cleanest.
Fungicides in Focus
One notable finding from EWG’s report is that many Dirty Dozen items were coated with fungicides linked to hormone disruption and reproductive issues in both men and women. While more research is needed, it is definitely worth considering when making purchasing decisions!
What You Can Do
To minimize your exposure to pesticides, opt for organic versions of the Dirty Dozen whenever possible. For the Clean Fifteen, both organic and non-organic options are good choices. Don’t forget that frozen produce is another great alternative!
By utilizing these lists and making informed choices, you can take steps to reduce your pesticide intake while still enjoying a variety of fruits and vegetables. Eating a balanced diet rich in nutrient dense produce is always a healthy choice, but these lists can help guide you when deciding between organic and conventional options.
